Core Energy:

Transformation

Keywords:

Evolution, Integration, Pressurized Growth

Basic Information

Other/Trade Names: Garnet Matrix Stone

Stone Type: Rock

Classification:

Type: Metamorphic

Name: Eclogite

Primary Minerals: Garnet, Omphacite

Crystal System: Isometric & Monoclinic

Color Range: Deep green, forest green, or olive green with red to wine-colored garnet

Mohs Hardness: 6.5-7.5

How To Identify:

Color: Red parts should look like rounded to slightly faceted "beads" (not glittery or flaky); Green part should look smooth, dense, & slightly waxy looking (not banded or shimmery)

Clarity: Opaque

Luster: Dull to slightly glassy (garnet spots may catch the light a little, but overall, it's more matte unless polished)

Texture: Dense & slightly heavy for its size (usually feels solid & compact with a slightly uneven surface)

Hardness: Can often scratch glass, especially where the garnet is present

Cleavage: No obvious overall cleavage (it doesn't break in clean, consistent planes)

Common Look-Alikes: Garnet Amphibolite, Garnet Granulite, Garnet Pyroxenite, Garnet-bearing basalt

Key Identifier: It looks like pomegranate seeds pressed into green clay (if it doesn't look like this, it isn't Eclogite)

Origin & History

Discovery:

1822- Monviso Massif in the Western Alps (France/Italy border)

Locations this crystal can be found:

Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Mali, Morocco, Norway, Tanzania, USA

History:

‍ ‍1. Eclogite is the rock that proved that the Earth recycles itself. It only forms deep beneath the earth's surface, which supports plate tectonics.

2. Some Eclogites contain microscopic diamonds and coesite, which forced science to accept that the earth's crust had traveled to mantle depths and survived the pressure. This is called ultra-high pressure metamorphism.

3. Many Eclogites began as lava on ancient seafloors. They were subducted & compressed just to resurface inside mountain belts hundreds of millions of years later.

Lore:

‍ ‍1. It is believed that Eclogite represents the self that is formed after pressure reshapes identity into something stronger than the original form.

2. Eclogite, since it contains garnet, is believed to align with life chapters that permanently alter one, such as initiations, endings, awakenings, & truths one cannot unknow.

3. Vedic and early Indian traditions associated green earth stones with the heart of nature and harmony with the world order, and when combined with the red garnet, represents belonging without losing one's identity.
