Origin & History

Origin:‍ ‍

1400's- Zschorlau, Germany

Locations this crystal can be found:‍ ‍

Australia, Madagascar, Brazil, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, India, Namibia, Tanzania, Russia, USA

History:

‍ ‍1. Dutch traders used Black Tourmaline heated in pipes to pull ash out of meerschaum pipes and called it "aschentrekkers", which means ash-pullers, because it became electrically charged and attracted particles.

2. Scientists studied its pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties, which helped early research into electricity, polarity, and crystal conductivity.

3. Iron-rich Black Tourmaline was placed in foundations or thresholds as a warding mineral in some traditional building practices, especially where naturally occurring tourmaline was common.

Lore:

‍ ‍1. Egyptians believed Black Tourmaline made its journey from the center of the Earth and passed over a rainbow, taking with it all of the colors as its own.

2. Some believe it is not indigenous to Earth and materialized onto our planet by higher life forms to assist humans with the transition into the Age of Aquarius.

3. Ancient shamans relied on it to protect them from earth demons.

Black Salt: Black salt has long been used in spiritual traditions as a tool for protection, purification, boundary-setting, & energetic cleansing. It is commonly incorporated in protective rituals, placed near doorways and windows, used to create energetic boundaries, or added to cleansing practices when it’s time to clear away unwanted energy and reclaim your space. This black salt was chosen as an Indigo Gem Pick for Black Tourmaline because it is a simple, yet powerful addition to this crystal’s already protective energy. Whether you’re refreshing the energy of your home, reinforcing personal boundaries, or creating a protective ritual, it serves as a tangible reminder that not everything deserves access to your energy. Sometimes, the most spiritual thing you can do is lovingly say, “Absolutely not.” Protect your home here! https://amzn.to/4x5zetI

Crystals for Energy Protection Book: Whether you’re just beginning to explore energy protection or looking to strengthen your spiritual toolkit, this book offers practical guidance for working with crystals to create healthier energetic boundaries… hence, why I chose it as an Indigo Gem Pick for Black Tourmaline. It explores a variety of stones, techniques, & everyday practices designed to help you stay grounded, balanced, & energetically aligned. A longtime favorite in the crystal community, this book makes energy protection approachable without requiring you to live on a mountaintop or carry seventeen crystals in your pockets at all times. Grounding Mat: Grounding, also known as earthing, is the practice of reconnecting with the earth’s natural electrical energy to promote a sense of balance, calm, & well-being. While nothing quite replaces kicking off your shoes and standing barefoot in the grass, grounding mats offer a convenient way to bring that practice indoors. This grounding mat was selected as an Indigo Gem Pick for Black Tourmaline because it complements its grounding energy. It’s designed for use under your feet while working, relaxing, meditating, or simply navigating the beautiful chaos of everyday life. If you’ve been feeling frazzled, scattered, or like your brain has had fifteen tabs open for the last three weeks, this mat can be a simple addition to your wellness routine. Consider it a little reminder to slow down, reconnect, & touch grass… without touching grass. Ground yourself here! https://amzn.to/4dNtD3N

Vetiver Essential Oil: Vetiver essential oil is often referred to as the “oil of tranquility” thanks to its rich, earthy aroma and reputation for promoting grounding, stability, & emotional balance. Distilled from the roots of the vetiver grass plant, it has a deep, smoky scent that many people turn to during times of stress, overwhelm, or when they need help feeling more centered and present. I chose this essential oil as an Indigo Gem Pick for Black Tourmaline because both are strongly associated with grounding, stability, & staying rooted during challenging times. Black Tourmaline helps create energetic boundaries, while Vetiver encourages you to slow down, reconnect with the present moment, & find solid footing when life feels chaotic. Together, they make a wonderful combination for anyone seeking a little more calm, resilience, & “I’ve got this” energy because, let’s be honest, most of us could use a little more of that from time to time. Stay centered here! https://amzn.to/4uRhlh1

White Sage Bundle: White sage has been traditionally used in cleansing and purification practices for generations. When burned respectfully, its aromatic smoke is often used to clear stagnant energy, refresh a space, & create a sense of renewal before meditation, spiritual work, or other intentional practices. Its earthy, herbal scent can help transform an ordinary room into a space that feels calm, focused, & energetically refreshed. I selected this white sage as an Indigo Gem Pick for Black Tourmaline because both are commonly associated with energetic cleansing and protection and I find that it’s the best way to cleanse this specific crystal. While Black Tourmaline is often used to absorb and transmute unwanted energy, white sage is used to clear and refresh the energy of a person, object, or space. Together, they create a powerful combination for maintaining energetic boundaries, releasing stuck energy, & keeping your favorite protective crystal feeling clean and ready for its next assignment.
