Origin & History
Origin:
1400's- Zschorlau, Germany
Locations this crystal can be found:
Australia, Madagascar, Brazil, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, India, Namibia, Tanzania, Russia, USA
History:
1. Dutch traders used Black Tourmaline heated in pipes to pull ash out of meerschaum pipes and called it "aschentrekkers", which means ash-pullers, because it became electrically charged and attracted particles.
2. Scientists studied its pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties, which helped early research into electricity, polarity, and crystal conductivity.
3. Iron-rich Black Tourmaline was placed in foundations or thresholds as a warding mineral in some traditional building practices, especially where naturally occurring tourmaline was common.
Lore:
1. Egyptians believed Black Tourmaline made its journey from the center of the Earth and passed over a rainbow, taking with it all of the colors as its own.
2. Some believe it is not indigenous to Earth and materialized onto our planet by higher life forms to assist humans with the transition into the Age of Aquarius.
3. Ancient shamans relied on it to protect them from earth demons.
